July 4th Reflections

Dear Readers and Friends,

Friday, July 4th was a troubling day for me. During the same week I was reflecting on the life of the journalist Bill Moyers who recently passed away. I remember how often I was challenged and inspired by his work. On July 4th I decided to watch a special he filmed in 1988. It was of a symposium put together by a dear colleague, the Jungian analyst, Dr. Harry Willmer, “Facing Evil,” originally titled, “Understanding Evil.” Bill Moyers featured a few of the speakers including a moving performance by Maya Angelou. Dr. Phillip Hallie gave an intense personal presentation on what happens when we fail to confront evil soon enough with the force of good. Then he shows we end up having to use evil force to overcome the evil. And, we must suffer the agony of knowing we are using evil for good or we risk becoming evil ourselves. Moyers remarks that the discussion of evil often became a celebration of life and the series ends with the admonishment we must always hope. I needed this reminder on July 4, 2025.

Offered With Love During These Difficult Times,
Bud Harris

What a find! thank you ever so much for posting this 1980’s conference. [can’t recall how I stumbled upon it, suppose I researched some Jungian topic]. ‘Fügung’, I suppose (one of those spot-on, though un-translatable german words] Deeply moving on many levels. And what a delight to see actual faces of humans (none compiled via various surgeries, assembled nor injected) as they sat attending , listening to some very raw topics and sharings and tellings. I keep re-reading the writings by CGJung , MarieLouiseVonFranz, etc on evil, collective shadow, the 4th function, and when not attended to – that’s how the collective shadow ‘sneaks in’. Chapeau, Signor Harris for sharing this BillMoyers gem. May you keep it available for time to come, as I plan to share it with friends far and wide. Cari saluti from Switzerland and very best wishes to you and your collaborators in deed and heart. C
